I don’t understand why people say ‘sir’ or ‘madam’ anymore anyway. Isn’t it a bit archaic?
I never understood why people used them on younger people, but teachers do it in school all the time. (Good encouragement for me to be quiet.)
It’s old politeness. Especially in the southern US, methinks.
When one is working retail, there are times when there’s really not much of an alternative to “ma’am” or “sir”…
