Small Press Expo success! The What’s Normal Anyway? comic book debuted and sold out this weekend at this amazing comic fest. Wow, what an incredible time getting to meet WNA readers and see all the interest for trans stories! The Queerotica anthology in which I contributed among several super talented artists was a huge hit, and the Queering the Mainstream? panel was one of the best attended without a spare seat in the house. ‘Tis the age of queer comics!

I fully feel Mel. I came out to a friend who more than occasionally shot “that’s so gay” phrases, found body hair on women icky and made comments about cross dressers that made me uncomfortable.
But when I came out on facebook she immediately messaged me that she stood behind me, adapted my chosen name and started calling me “dude”. I was… SO CONFUSED
I read all the comics on my iPhone in a day, giving myself a sore neck in the process. As someone beginning, after 30 years of contemplation, to do something about my gender, I found the comic inspiring, heartwarming and highly entertaining. In fact, despite having lived my entire life in a big city, it wasn’t unit quite recently (maybe 10 years) that I discovered I might be able to do something to make my body more closely resemble who I really am. Mel’s story also illustrated how much I have to learn. But this isn’t the place for my story.
But it seems like you feel that it is complete. Of course Mel has made a long and remarkable journey, but is his story finished? I would be very disappointed if there isn’t going to be more new issues (pun intended) to read. You are such a talented artist and storyteller and have created a most compelling character. If you aren’t going to be continuing Mel’s story, I would like to see your next work. And I’m certain I’m not alone in this.
I plan to buy your book (very disappointed to have missed the tour), but will have to tuck it behind some others until I gain the courage to come out to my family, who visit frequently.

Thank you so much for your comment! Hearing how the comic has affected you like that is amazing and heartwarming. It made me think long and hard about articulating plans going forward with WNA, which I’ve posted on the 9/23/13 comic “Call Waiting.” I am nowhere near being done with art and storytelling, but with so much change going on in my life right now it’s unclear what that art will look like exactly. In any case, your kind words are extremely encouraging, so thank you!!
I encountered you at SPX and took the two free one-sheets and your business card. I came back on Sunday, but by the time I made it back to your table, I think your book was sold out! Still, your stuff led me to this site and your comic, and it’s wonderful!
